How do you hand wash a keffiyeh?
- Fill a basin or clean sink with cold water. Cold protects both the cotton and the dye in the woven pattern.
- Add a small amount of mild detergent. Skip anything with bleach or "brightening" agents.
- Submerge the keffiyeh and swish it gently for a minute or two. Let it soak for ten to fifteen minutes if it needs it.
- Drain and rinse in fresh cold water until the water runs clear.
- Press the cloth against the side of the basin to push water out. Do not twist or wring; twisting strains the weave and the tassel knots.
- Lay it flat on a towel, roll the towel to absorb the excess, then unroll.
Can you machine wash a keffiyeh?
We recommend against it, and our care label says hand wash. The risk is not the cotton itself; it is the tassels and the open weave. An agitating drum tangles tassels into knots and can pull threads out of the border rows.
If you must use a machine, reduce the risk: place the keffiyeh in a zipped mesh laundry bag, use the gentlest cold cycle, wash it alone or with similar colours, and skip the spin. Then air dry. Never put a keffiyeh in a dryer. Heat shrinks cotton and sets wrinkles into the weave.
How do you dry a keffiyeh?
Air dry, away from direct sun. Flat drying on a towel keeps the square true. Line drying works too; fold it over the line rather than hanging it by one edge, so the weight does not stretch one side. Direct sunlight will dry it faster but fades dyed patterns over repeated cycles, so shade is the better habit.
How do you iron a keffiyeh?
The easiest pass is while the cloth is still slightly damp:
- Set the iron to low or the cotton-low setting.
- Lay the keffiyeh flat and smooth it by hand first.
- Iron in straight lines with the weave, not in circles.
- Keep the iron away from the tassels. If the border area needs pressing, cover it with a thin cotton cloth first.
Steam is fine on woven cotton. If the keffiyeh is fully dry, a light mist of water before ironing does the same job as steam.
How do you care for the tassels?
Tassels take the most wear and cause the most worry. Three habits keep them in shape:
- Detangle by hand, finger-combing gently from the base outward. Never pull a knot tight to "get it over with"; work it loose.
- Do not brush them. Brushes fray the twisted threads.
- Trim stray fibres with sharp scissors rather than pulling them, which can unravel the twist.

What do you do about snags and stains?
Snags: never pull a snagged thread. Pulling gathers the weave along the whole row. Instead, ease the surrounding cloth flat with your fingers, then use a needle to draw the loose loop through to the back of the cloth where it can sit invisibly.
Stains: spot-treat as soon as you can. Dab, do not rub, with cold water and a drop of mild detergent. For oily marks, a little dish soap on the spot before a normal hand wash usually lifts it. Avoid stain sticks with bleach on the white ground of a black-and-white keffiyeh; they weaken cotton and yellow it over time.
How should you store a keffiyeh?
Folded, dry, and out of the sun. A drawer or shelf is ideal. Two details worth the extra ten seconds: make sure it is fully dry before it goes in (damp cotton in a closed drawer invites mildew), and fold it loosely rather than pressing it under heavier clothing, which sets deep creases. If you hang it, use a wide hanger bar, not a hook, so the weight spreads.
How often should you wash a keffiyeh?
Rarely. A keffiyeh worn as a scarf does not need washing on a clothing schedule. Air it out between wears and wash it when it actually needs it: after heavy sweat, dust, or a stain. Every wash is a small amount of wear, and the cloth ages better with fewer of them.
