Sponsorships provide hope and stability. At KUVRD, our mission goes beyond crafting handmade keffiyehs. Each keffiyeh sold supports orphaned children in Gaza and Yemen, offering access to education, meals, and a brighter future.
The Global Crisis of Orphaned Children
It is estimated that there are currently around 153 million orphans worldwide. It’s important to note that while this is a documented statistic, the actual numbers could be higher, especially given the genocide in Gaza, which has severely impacted the ability of organizations and ministries to function.
Our recent partnership with Human Appeal’s sponsorship program is a response to this devastation, intending to bring hope into the lives of orphaned children and improve their quality of life amidst such darkness. By purchasing handmade keffiyehs, you’re directly contributing to the aid for Yemeni orphans and support for Palestinian orphans, ensuring these children’s needs are supported
Our Philosophy: Karam in Every Handmade Keffiyeh
In our previous blog, we introduced our partnership with Human Appeal and highlighted its importance to us as an ethical brand rooted in our core philosophy, KARAM. As a continuation of our previous blog, this piece aims to provide deeper insight into the struggles of orphaned children and emphasize why sponsorships are vital to their lives. Humanitarian causes that need immediate attention are why we integrate our mission into every piece we make, including our handmade keffiyeh scarf sales for supporting Palestinian orphans. Each time you wear our handmade keffiyeh you not only celebrate the heritage of Palestine but also directly contribute to aid for Yemeni orphans.
The Daily Struggles of Orphaned Children in Gaza and Yemen
For many of us living in safety and security, day-to-day worries might revolve around work or personal goals we are striving towards. But for orphaned children in Palestine and Yemen, their daily struggles are more intense–fighting for basic needs like education, food, clean water, and a safe place to live all while carrying the grief of loss.
According to the United Nations, the number of documented orphans in Gaza now ranges between 17,000 and 18,000 many of whom are unaccompanied by any family members. In Yemen, that number rises dramatically to 1.1 million, which is a reflection of the ongoing conflict driving poverty and death.
These staggering statistics immediately compelled us to take action and uphold our core philosophies at KUVRD. Because of this, through each purchase of a traditional Palestine keffiyeh, you’re providing security for children.
Addressing Hunger Through Sponsorships
Currently, in Gaza and Yemen, many children do not have adequate daily nutrition or food, and families are facing severe shortages due to danger zones, blockades and rise in food costs. On top of this, orphaned children don’t even have families to turn to for these basic food packages they need to survive each day.
Essentially, these children are not only facing hunger but malnutrition which is stunting their growth and development. While these challenges may seem overwhelming, there is always hope. Through our partnership with Human Appeal, we are committed to bringing much-needed support to orphaned children in Gaza and Yemen. Each meal provided through the sponsorship program is funded by purchases of our handmade keffiyeh scarves and ensures stability for children in need.
Providing Care Beyond Basic Needs
Orphaned children in Gaza and Yemen require more than just basic needs, they deserve a parent figure, and a caregiver to support them emotionally and guide them through the challenges they face. This is why a stipend of the sponsorship goes towards providing a caregiver who can offer not only food and shelter but also essential support these children need to heal and thrive.
These caregivers ensure they have access to education and a sense of stability that's often missing in the lives of orphaned children. While younger children, like those we sponsor aged 8 and below still rely heavily on their caregivers, older children, like 16-year-old Mays are transitioning into adulthood and need their caregiver for more nuanced support.
This initiative, funded through the purchase of our traditional Palestine keffiyehs aligns accurately with our values as an ethical brand. It’s not just about selling keffiyehs, it's about creating a meaningful impact through each piece you wear.
